Description

If you have been looking for a cactus linen placemat with genuine botanical precision — not a stylised print, but a watercolour so accurate that real prickly pear pads placed beside it look like they grew from the same drawing — Nopal is what you are looking for. The placemat brings the botanical world of the Nopal tablecloth to the place setting — but not through simple cropping. For the placemat, six distinct designs were created, each composed specifically to fit the 40 x 50 cm / 16″ x 19″ format perfectly. Every design draws on the elements of the tablecloth’s watercolour — the spiny prickly pear pads, the great gold yellow flowers, the buds, the grey sketched elements on natural linen ground — but with its own composition, conceived and balanced for that specific format.

The six images on this page show the six designs: one dominated by the great central pad with its buds; one with the yellow flower in full bloom among the pads; one with the long-spined cactus and striped-petal flowers; one with a full-field composition of pads and flowers; one almost entirely floral, with large yellow blooms in the foreground; one with flowering cylindrical cacti and a grey sketched flower in the background. Six different framings of the same garden.

The placemats are sold individually: everyone can build their own set choosing the designs and the number of pieces — all matching, all different, or a mix.

The Nopal design is an exclusive La Bottega di Casa creation.

As with all natural linen products, small fibre irregularities may be visible — slubs, weave variations, slight differences in thread thickness. These are not flaws: they are the signature of natural fabric, and part of what gives the cloth its character.

Style notes

The photographs on this page tell a detail worth more than many words: the fresh prickly pear pads resting beside the placemats are almost indistinguishable from the printed ones. That is the measure of the botanical precision of this design — the green is right, the spines are in the right places, the form is true.

On a raw wood table — as in the images — the Nopal placemat has a Mediterranean, informal immediacy: summer breakfasts, veranda lunches, outdoor aperitivi. Coloured glasses in green and yellow pick up the palette of the design with lightness. But the same placemat on white marble or a lacquered table shifts register entirely and becomes an almost contemporary graphic object.

It is the freest format in the Nopal collection: one placemat for a morning breakfast, two for a lunch for two, six for a full table — choosing whether to set the table with six different designs for a garden effect, or several pieces of the same design for a more formal, coordinated table. A placemat that feels equally at home in a San Miguel courtyard, on a Sicilian terrace, or in a refined Santa Fe interior.

Why choose this placemat

Because it brings the Nopal design — La Bottega di Casa’s tribute to San Miguel de Allende — into its most everyday and versatile format. No occasion is required: this is the placemat of the morning breakfast, the quick lunch, the afternoon coffee. And every time, the cactus with its yellow flowers brings a piece of Mexico to the table — or of Sicily, or of the American Southwest, depending on where your memory takes you.

Because the six designs offer a rare compositional freedom: few placemats allow you to set a table with six different botanical compositions from the same family.

Because it is sold individually, so everyone can build a set tailored to their needs.

And because it is Made in Italy, produced with the same care as the tablecloth in our atelier in Follina (Treviso).

Complete the table

The Nopal rule applies to the placemat too: solid colours are the ideal companion. Natural linen napkins, olive green, or ochre yellow complete the place setting by picking up one of the tones of the design. A solid-colour tablecloth underneath — the natural or grey vintage linen from our collection — turns the placemats into botanical islands on a neutral ground, a very considered effect.

White or green ceramic plates, or natural stoneware; coloured glasses in green and yellow — as in the images — for those who enjoy chromatic coordination; transparent crystal for a more classic register.

The Nopal placemat is part of the Nopal family at La Bottega di Casa, which also includes the tablecloth and coordinated napkins — all featuring the same exclusive botanical watercolour.

Frequently asked questions

How do the six designs differ from each other? Each design is an autonomous composition built from the elements of the Nopal watercolour: one is dominated by the great cactus pad with buds, one by the yellow flower in full bloom, one by the long-spined cactus, one by a full-field composition, one by large flowers in the foreground, one by flowering cylindrical cacti. The six images on this page show them all.

Are the placemats cropped from the Nopal tablecloth fabric? No. Unlike the tablecloth — where the continuous design produces ever-different compositions — the six placemat designs were composed specifically to fit the 40 x 50 cm format perfectly. Each design is calibrated for that dimension: nothing is cropped, nothing is accidental.

Can I choose which design I receive? Yes. The six designs are managed separately on our website: each design has its own listing, and you can choose exactly which ones to buy and in what quantity. All matching for a coordinated table, all different for the garden effect, or a mix — the composition of your set is entirely in your hands.

What should I pair them with? Solid colours: natural linen, olive green, or ochre yellow napkins, and solid-colour tablecloths such as the natural or grey vintage linen from our collection. White or green ceramic plates, or natural stoneware. The design is already rich: the rest of the table should accompany it, not compete with it.

Does the print fade with washing? Digital print on linen is designed to withstand repeated machine washes at 40°C (104°F). Over time the colour acquires a subtle patina consistent with the watercolour aesthetic. Do not bleach.
