Description

If you have been looking for a hydrangea linen tablecloth where the flowers have the scale, depth, and botanical precision of a period illustration — not a decorative pattern, but a genuine painterly rendering — Ortensia is what you are looking for. The design unfolds in two horizontal bands with the natural linen ground visible at the centre as a pause of light between two flowering gardens. The hydrangeas — dusty pink, mauve, cream white, with the sterile florets framing the fertile ones — are painted at large scale, with the same abundance they carry in reality. Dark, glossy, substantial leaves provide chromatic counterpoint to the softness of the flowers.

The design is continuous, not modular: there is no fixed repeat point, but a composition that flows along the fabric with natural fluidity. This means every tablecloth, depending on its dimensions and cut point in the fabric, will present a slightly different composition.

The Ortensia design is an exclusive La Bottega di Casa creation.

As with all natural linen products, small fibre irregularities may be visible — slubs, weave variations, slight differences in thread thickness. These are not flaws: they are the signature of natural fabric, and part of what gives the cloth its character.

Style notes

The first image shows the tablecloth in a French garden — gravel, faded blue shutters, wisteria on the wall, a hedge of white hydrangeas in the background that almost mirrors the design on the cloth. A bouquet of pink roses in a glass vase at the centre brings the garden to the table in the most literal way: design and nature in continuous conversation. It is garden entertaining at its most beautifully considered.

The second image shifts register entirely. The same tablecloth, photographed at sunset on the loggia of an Italian villa — stone columns, antique silver soup tureen, blown crystal glasses. The warm light of dusk transforms the pinks of the Ortensia into almost copper tones, deeper and denser. The antique silverware finds a precious contrast in the cream white of the lighter hydrangeas. The design that carries an almost springlike lightness in daylight acquires a more solemn presence in the evening. The same tablecloth — but a different occasion entirely.

Why choose this tablecloth

Because hydrangea is one of the most beloved flowers in European gardens — and its translation onto linen is rarely done well. Here the design is botanically precise and pictorially generous: the petals have depth, the inflorescences have structure, the colours overlap as they do in watercolour on wet paper. This is not a decorative floral print: it is a botanical illustration that brings the memory of the garden to the table.

Because every piece is unique — the continuous motif guarantees no two tablecloths are identical.

Because every tablecloth is hand-cut and finished with mitered corners in our atelier in Follina (Treviso).

And because the Ortensia works across two opposite registers — the informal garden lunch and the formal dinner in a villa — with equal naturalness.

Complete the table

Pure white ceramics are the safest and most elegant pairing — they let both the pinks and whites of the design emerge without introducing competing colours. For those who want to bring the tones of the design into the table setting, plates with a dusty pink or mauve border work very well. Natural linen napkins complete the service by echoing the linen ground.

The most natural centrepiece is botanical: pink roses, fresh hydrangeas, peonies — the flowers that share the palette of the design. Or, for a different balance, a wholly green centrepiece — olive branches, eucalyptus, herbs — to counterweight the chromatic richness of the printed flowers.

Hydrangea works beautifully with the double tablecloth technique: used as the upper printed layer over a lavender or natural white vintage linen base, it allows the base to show in the side drop. Lavender vintage linen amplifies the mauve and dusty pink tones of the design in a particularly successful way.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you say every tablecloth is unique? The design is continuous — not built on a module that repeats identically. The cut point in the fabric determines which flowers appear in which position, and two tablecloths of the same size cut at different points will have a slightly different composition. This is part of the character of the product — every piece is its own.

Does the print fade with washing? Digital print on linen is designed to withstand repeated machine washes at 40°C (104°F). Over time the colour acquires a subtle patina consistent with the watercolour aesthetic. Do not bleach.

Is Hydrangea Ortensia available in round format? No. The two-band horizontal structure of the design is conceived for rectangular formats. For a round table with a botanical floral print, we recommend Pansée Allover, available as a round linen tablecloth up to 170 cm (67″) in diameter.

What table setting works best with Hydrangea Ortensia? White ceramics are always the most effective pairing. For a chromatic coordination, plates with a dusty pink or mauve border echo the tones of the design without competing. A fresh flower centrepiece in the same palette — roses, hydrangeas, peonies — is the most natural complement. For something different, a purely green botanical centrepiece balances the chromatic richness of the print beautifully.
